Body Composition

The Body Composition analysis is a great way of accurately measuring body fat percentage, lean body mass percentage and give you a measurement of your basal metabolic rate (BMR) – all of which can help you achieve your body composition goal. This test will consist of skinfold analysis and a BMR test.

Skinfold Assessment

The thickness of seven skinfolds at specific locations on the body are measure using precise callipers. The thickness of these folds is a measure of the subcutaneous adipose tissue (fat beneath the skin).

Your follow up report consists of:

  • Body fat %
  • Lean mass %
  • Sum of seven skinfolds
  • Resting Metabolic Rate

During this assessment your oxygen consumption will be measured whilst at complete rest. This data determines the amount of energy (calories) your body uses at rest.

This information can be used to guide the amount of calories you require on a daily basis, which is useful for body composition goals, such as fat loss or increasing muscle mass.

Metabolic testing is appropriate for a range of individuals from those not currently taking part in an exercise programme through to professional athletes.

    Level One:
    Lactate Profile

The lactate profile is a sub-maximal step-test, which involves exercising for 3-4 minute stages at progressive speeds/power outputs. Heart rate, blood lactate and rating on perceived exertion (RPE), are measured at the end of each stage to create a physiological profile.

From this test important metabolic ‘thresholds’ are identified. These are used to calculate heart rate and intensity training zones. The recommended training zones can then be used to guide training and monitor progress.

    Level Two:
    Lactate profile and VO2 analysis

During this assessment expired gas is measured throughout to measure exercise economy. Following the lactate profile a maximal test is performed whereby the exercise intensity is increased until volitional exhaustion, at which point maximal VO2max) is measured.

This is our most popular test and suitable for amateur through to professional athletes looking to understand and improve their endurance performance. Measures gained from this profile include:

  • Lactate threshold
  • Lactate turnpoint
  • Heart rate training zones
  • Exercise economy
  • Maximum oxygen uptake (VO2max)
  • Level Three:
    Full Physiological Profile

This is our most comprehensive physiological assessment of endurance performance. This is suitable for amateur and professional athletes who want to understand and improve their endurance performance as well as obtaining detailed body composition and exercise metabolism data.

It includes a lactate profile and VO2 analysis as well as a body composition assessment via a skinfold assessment to accurately determine body fat levels as well as exercise metabolism data.

    VO2max Test

This test is suitable for anyone wishing to precisely measure their aerobic capacity for health or performance.

During this test, exercise intensity is gradually increased until volitional exhaustion, at which point maximal oxygen uptake (VO2max) is measured. This measure provides an excellent measure of cardiorespitory health/fitness and is also a strong predictor of endurance performance. In this test the blood lactate threshold determination is replaced with a simpler (scientifically validated) estimation of gas exchange threshold using expired gases only. All participants receive a written explanation of test results, which include individualised training zones.

See What Clients Have to Say

I came to ElitePerformanceNI to get my body composition assessed. I was coming back from injury and wanted to check my current lean muscle and body fat levels before pre-season began. The assessment of body composition and resting metabolic rate allowed for a detailed report on the calories required for training which will fuel my performance for the season ahead.
As an International athlete, understanding the calories & fuels required for performance are so important. ElitePerformanceNI assessed my RMR and body composition to allow me to accurately assess my fuelling needs for the season ahead. Working with Stephen was a delight and the knowledge he has provided me with will enable me to excel my performances!
My lab testing at ElitePerformanceNI allowed me to assess my current fitness levels. Stephen provided me with some key training recommendations for areas where I could improve my performance for my club and country.
I contacted Stephen to help with my current training. As a Hyrox athlete I wanted to understand of my current fitness levels for some upcoming events. I was provided with a detailed report and training guidelines to improve my endurance performance. I am looking forward to me next assessment.
As a business owner and athlete, I know the importance of goal setting and targets. When I signed up for the Manchester marathon I knew that understanding my current strengths and weaknesses would help me in my training ahead. ElitePerformanceNI assessed my blood lactate and VO2max allowing me to set specific training zones giving me more accurate training data.
